Maya Makri
I am a trauma-informed voice & breath coach and somatic therapist. My approach is client-led as I believe the expert on what is happening with your voice, breath and body is You. I am extremely passionate about all aspects of voice and breath but particularly the psychophysical connections. Our voice and breath is as unique as our fingerprint, telling our particular story of who and how we are in the world. My job is to support you in becoming aware of your patterns and enquiring whether they are working for you.
My specialist interests include vocal identity, voice and performance, vocal gender expression and corporate communication strategy. I also specialise in somatic approaches for nervous system regulation in neurodivergence, complex trauma and PTSD.
I love teaching, having spent nine years as a university lecturer developing pedagogical material and training postgraduates, something I still enjoy as a visiting lecturer today.
As well as my local 1-1 clients and groups, I work internationally with professional voice users and business leaders as a voice consultant. I liaise with multinational teams and support my clients in developing optimum communication skills in stressful performance situation, whether in a meeting, online or facing large audiences. Working in this fast-paced, ever-changing industry amongst people who are very good at what they do keeps me on my toes to continuously rethink, improve and adapt my training skills.
Qualifications & training:
My work is nervous system and trauma-informed, underpinned by a grounding in voice studies, vocal and respiratory anatomy, manual therapy, queer theory, somatic trauma therapy and functional breathwork.
I started out as a linguist with an MA in conference interpreting, ending up teaching interpreting and communication skills to MA students at Leeds university for nine years.
I then went on to train with some of the leading voice, breathwork and somatic practitioners as part of my MA in Voice Studies at Central School of Speech and Drama, graduating in 2015. I recently completed Babette Rothschild’s accredited course in Somatic Trauma Therapy and am certified in Buteyko® breathwork (2023), Oxygen Advantage® (2023), Transformational Breath® (2018) and myofascial therapy (2019). I have completed many professional training courses in vocal pedagogy, vocal manual therapy, ACCENT method, neurodivergence-informed mindfulness and polyvagal theory to name a few. I greatly enjoy learning new skills and rethinking my practice for my own self-development and to share with my clients.
